licensing help / azure + on premise

Hi,

what is best way to get help from Microsoft regarding licensing in hybrid environment where portion of the system is in Azure and rest of it is on premise?

Tried with our distro but they are also unsure.

It is unbelievable we are still unable to find somebody inside Microsoft who actually knows how things are licensed in certain scenarios 😂😂😂

@imadam : You can also post the specific question here, and we will certainly try to answer.

As mentioned above, usually Microsoft has delegated this to the distributors which are actually selling the licenses but of course we can try to help and point to the respective licensing documentation, so your customer has the necessary documentation in case of an audit.

If the question is more about technical licensing (and not pricing related) - you can also raise a request in the technical Presales & deployment services team: https://aka.ms/technicalservices Will also send a direct message to you on this.

Generally the licensing terms, the official rulings out of which it can be determined which license is required, are located here: Licensing Terms | Microsoft Volume Licensing

Of course, some rulings also depend on the type of agreement (e.g. EA or MCA), but all agreements refer to those product terms for service-specific ruling. Those documents - the agreement itself, and the version of the product terms applicable ,are the basis for any answer on licensing rulings. What we can do here, is to explain which parts of those docs are relevant for your scenario and what options exist.

Kind regards,
Janosch

Hi @imadam,

You should reach to Partner Support:

Go to Partner Support:

  1. Click Browse Topics
  2. Select the appropriate Category and Topic such as:
    • CSP -> Pricing and Offers
    • Incentives -> Enterprise
    • Commercial Marketplace -> Offer Pricing and Availability
    • Volume Licensing -> Volume Licensing (VL)
  3. Select a Subtopic

Additionally, you can check the Guide to licensing resources for Microsoft partners: Guide to licensing resources for Microsoft partners

I got this:

any idea how to open up this ticket ?

I'm not sure if that is a problem with the portal or any authentication requirement. But I've found the form for direct VL Support request:

@Trigueiro , looks like this is issue with portal. It is not accessible by me but I am logged in partner portal. As far as link provided:

imadam_0-1627039244853.png

so this is for licenses already purchased. What I am looking is to distinguish what license is actually required for certain scenario. Our distributor and few other people they contacted from Microsoft have opinion but they are also unsure about scenario. Customer we are dealing with is looking for licensing where MS audit will not  find anything wrong. I am getting felling that Microsoft has made licencing so complicated that even people within Microsoft actually don't get it 🙂.

Well this was just a workaround, the appropriate channel is to reach to your Distributor / CSP Provider, and they should be able to provide you with licensing details, even if they don't have the knowledge, they have account managers and communication channels to work with Microsoft in order to get any clarification. So I suggest you go get back on your distro / provider.

@Trigueiro ,

I went already in to appropriate channel but support on these type of issues is really weak as far as Microsoft goes. This is something Microsoft needs to work on since these projects will be directed away from Microsoft by customer's demand. Customers are looking clear licensing where they can understand and decide what is appropriate license they required for specific project. Without this, they will drive us towards Linux based solution where they can understand EULA.
