New M365 SKUs in EA/EAS/MPSA to streamline license administration
Beginning November 1, 2018, we will make available new SKUs for Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 EA/EAS/MPSA channels. There are no changes to the services provided by these SKUs. Instead, they provide a more streamlined customer admin experience as they will appear in the customer's Admin Center and License Summary as a single item--as opposed to the current M365 E3/E5 SKUs which appear as 3 separate items (O365, EMS, Windows). This will make it easier for admins to assign and manage their M365 licenses.
The prior Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 SKUs with the individual components will be renamed in the price list to 'Microsoft E3 Original' and 'Microsoft E5 Original'. These changes will be published on the November 1 price list and are shown on October 1 preview.
The new SKUs should be used for new subscriptions or tenants. For existing subscriptions, customers should continue to use their original SKUs which will remain available to order. A customer with an original SKU that chooses to transition to the new SKU will have to go through a manual process of un-assigning the original SKUs and reassigning the new SKU. This is not supported by Microsoft CSS.
I note the last paragraph that states:
"A customer with an original SKU that chooses to transition to the new SKU will have to go through a manual process of un-assigning the original SKUs and reassigning the new SKU. This is not supported by Microsoft CSS."
What happens - like in our case where we renew our contract and get forced on to the new SKU's without options? Seems Microsoft have implemented a change in their licensing and not given any support or tools to allow companies that HAVE to transition over to the new SKU's?
There are tools available that help to re-assign licenses, for larger number of user you probably want to use powershell: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/enterprise/powershell/assign-licenses-to-user-accounts-with-office-365-powershell
"Not supported by CSS" in this context means that Microsoft Support will not do this for customers, it does not mean that it unsupported to reassign the licenses using the usual tools you have for management.
