Install Active Directory on Virtual Machines

Hi,

One of our customers requested to migrate his current old Active Directory 2008R2 to 2016. Customer asking is it possible to deploy all new AD Servers on Virtual Machines or at least on physical server is required?

I searched over the technet but couldn't find confirmed info regarding this point.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,

Virtualization is main-stream and Active Directory virtualization is FULLY supported. In fact, we can spin up a windows server in Azure and use it as a domain controller for all the virtual machines that are part of a virtual network. Active Directory characteristics are virtualization-friendly. Save up to 40% with a license you already own with Azure reserved instances. Furthermore, the Azure Hybrid Benefit enables customers with Software Asurance on their Windows Server licences to license Azure based virtual machines for windows server and save up to 82%.

There's absolutly no problem virtualizing all domain controllers. With any active directory domain it is recommeded to have at least two domain controllers to maintain high availability and disater mitigation. With that in mind it's best to setup virtual machine affinity rules such that both DCs would never run on the same host.
