Microsoft Traineeship Program by Beth Worrall

Returning from Inspire in Las Vegas refreshed, renewed and INSPIRED (albeit with a bit of jetlag), I’m thrilled to bring the momentum back to Australia to share the recent updates and expansion plans for the Microsoft Traineeship Program. Specifically, extending our program to Melbourne!

As I shared with many of our partners at the conference last week, we know there is a skills shortage in IT - not just in Australia but globally as well. To tackle this industry challenge, last year at Inspire we announced our ambition to work with our vocational education sector to launch the Microsoft Traineeship Program in Sydney. Combining education with on-the-job experience, aligning the Certificate IV in IT with a number of Microsoft Azure certifications, the pilot program launched in Sydney and Canberra in February 2019 has allowed us to create a specialist course and a new pipeline of talent for our customers and partners.

In just six months, the interest from our partners and customers, as well as the candidates applying to the program, has been tremendous. Here are some highlights I’d like to share with you:

  • To date, nearly 60 trainees have been onboarded into the program are receiving paid employment with over 25 Microsoft partners and customers
  • 60% are classified as diverse – we have placed women, Indigenous trainees, trainees with disabilities and those from a non-English speaking background. Our youngest trainee is 17, our oldest is 45. Whilst their backgrounds may be very different, they are united by their positive energy and enthusiasm, intellectual horsepower and passion to work in technology.
  • Over 3000 people have applied for this program in Australia so far, so we are keen to create employment opportunities for as many people as we can

Given the success of the program in Sydney and Canberra, we are expanding the program to South Australia and Melbourne late 2019.

South Australia Update

In June, we announced the partnership with the SA government to bring the program to Adelaide. Commencing the first cohort of up to 40 trainees in September 2019, we are thrilled to bring the program to Adelaide and want to thank HCL, CompNow, DXC, Datacom, Ipau, and Logic Plus for their commitment to host a trainee. Recruitment in Adelaide is currently underway and we are still looking for host partners to take on trainees. If you’re interested, please reach out today!

Melbourne Expansion

Hot off the press from Inspire, last week we announced that we’re expanding the program to Victoria with both the Azure track and, due to high industry demand, a new Dynamics-themed track. We’re aiming to pilot with a cohort of 30 trainees across both tracks, with the view to onboard a larger cohort of trainees in February 2020.

As you can see, FY19 was a busy year for the Microsoft Traineeship Program. To those partners who have participated so far – thank you! We could not have established this program without your help.
